RECAP: Kiran’s Birthday Wellness Weekend

It’s amazing how a chance encounter ushered me into Kiran’s vibrant world. I can still remember the magnetic pull that drew me to her signature yellow-cloth-covered table at that internship fair on campus. During a morning clouded with feelings of inadequacy, there she was, almost as if in response to a prayer. These were just a few of the thoughts swirling in my mind as I made my way to London to celebrate Kiran’s 35th birthday.

The weekend unfolded like a beautiful tapestry of connection and joy, beginning with a warm welcome reception hosted by Tim and Kate. Kate and Kiran go way back. Throughout the night, I caught glimpses of their friendship, rooted in years of shared experiences and mutual support. And then there were our amazing mocktail bartenders, likely the youngest in history! Laila and Lyra glided around the room, their small hands reaching for tall glasses to refill. I loved how seriously they took on the role. I loved their confident, spirited personalities and the burst of energy they added to the gathering, along with a shower of confetti.

From the reception, “box and brunch,” to the yoga and sound bath session followed by an unforgettable Michelin star experience at Gymkhana, I engaged in conversations that revealed the depth of Kiran’s impact on those around her. The stories I heard only confirmed  what I knew to be true – Kiran is someone who not only sees the light in others but encourages them to own that light. Someone who envelops those around her with a sense of belonging and worth. Someone who inspires love. It wasn’t until after Kiran guided us through a soothing partner yoga practice when the irony of it all struck me. Although we were in London to celebrate her birthday, she made it so that each event was carefully curated to honor everyone present.

I’m instantly reminded of Ashley’s story, one of the many guests who flew across the ocean to celebrate our dear Kiran. Years ago, Ashley found herself idly people-watching from the outdoor patio of a NYC restaurant. Suddenly, the sleek silhouette of a black SUV came to a stop right in front of the restaurant. As the door swung open, Ashley’s curiosity piqued. Out stepped Kiran, radiating confidence and most likely adorned in a splash of vibrant yellow. To Ashley’s surprise, she sauntered over and claimed a seat at her table. What followed was an unexpected three-hour hangout session that left Ashley feeling uplifted and inspired by Kiran’s magnetic personality and genuine warmth. As I listened to the story, I was initially taken back. Wait, so this stranger just sat at your table uninvited and afterwards she brought you to her home where you ended up hanging out for three hours? But then it dawned on me: Kiran is just the type to make spontaneous connections like that. After all, “light reflects light.”

As I reminisce about Kiran’s birthday weekend, I’m reminded of the importance of cherishing moments of connection and spreading love wherever we go. This seemed to be the intention for everyone who was present. Their unique backgrounds, easy acceptance, and willingness to exchange stories created an atmosphere that felt truly special. It was a space where strangers felt like old friends, and laughter flowed effortlessly. Amidst a backdrop of local and global scenes of horror and tragedy, it’s these moments of joy, togetherness, and innocence that reassure me that there is still so much goodness to be cultivated.
