29ROOMS: MADAME GANDHI “The Future is Female” x Jen Mussari (NYC + LA)

This years 29Rooms took place in Brooklyn, New York. For those who don’t know, 29Rooms is Refinery29’s “Funhouse of Style, Culture, and Technology.” Each room seeks to capture and engage audiences with interactive art created by a multitude of non-profit brands and artists who are shaping culture and restructuring how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. Executive Creative Director of Refinery29, Piera Luisa Gelardi, describes this years theme as, “transcendental art,” “to create a space that has transformative power, creativity and show the ability art has to spark ideas, action and bring positivity and inspiration to people’s lives.”

Madame Gandhi collaborated with 29Rooms to create, “The Future is Female” room. Painted her signature yellow and filled with punching bags decorated with feminist slogans by illustrator Jen Mussari, the space is designed for those who need to release their frustrations concerning our current political climate. The punching bags also played back to the tracks playing in the room, creating a harmony of sounds with each punch.

Gelardi says that the goal was “to create something where people used their physicality to turn their aggression and frustration into art.” The goal was met, as many left the room saying, “I didn’t realize how much I needed that expression.”
