Today I went out to Provincetown, MA on a job to hear 86-yr-old Edie Windsor speak about love, how she and her team of powerful lady lawyers took on the Supreme Court to strike down DOMA and how they won. I was hired to run audio for a day on the shoot for a documentary being made down in Mississippi. Robbie Kaplan, her lawyer, told the story of how the strategy they ended up using was about ownership of real-estate, and how not recognizing Edie’s marriage to her wife was discrimination based on sex. For better or for worse, she explained, it was easier to win a case this way, on a legal technicality, than it was to win by trying to change perspectives towards gay rights. She also explained it was actually more effective for her to pick one story and one case and try to win, than to have the voices of tons of different gay voices featured.
